Earth Hour 2018

Eco-Trust and WWF collaborate for Pre-Earth Hour 2018 Activities

January 11, 2019
In observance of Earth Hour 2018, the Eco-Trust Society collaborated with the World Wildlife Fund for Guyana to host an exhibition to spread environmental awareness to the public, showcasing creative, well-constructed environmental models and artful pieces designed originally by the students of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Science. The exhibits were put on display under tents on the lawns of the Guyana Stores Ltd premises. General passers-by were welcomed by Eco-Trust members who ardently explained the concepts of environment, being environmentally-friendly and sustainability; and how the models and pieces were constructed to emulate these defining terms with the country in mind.

The Eco-Trust Society and the Biology Club joined hands in celebrating Earth Hour for the year 2018, through a number of Earth Hour Awareness activities, inviting students from all over the University of Guyana to take part. The event took place on the lawns of the Natural Science faculty building, on the 23rd March, one day prior to the official observance date which was the 24th March. The event was endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund for Guyana.

Representatives from the two clubs addressed the assembled crowd of students about what Earth Hour entailed and the objective of observing such an event. They highlighted many ways in which students can participate to pay homage to the significance of the observance and why their involvement is paramount to raising recognition and action against climate change; to have a mindset of:
"changing climate change."

The theme for this year: Connect 2 Earth

What exactly is Earth Hour? Why should it be important to us?

Earth Hour is a globally recognized annual event organized by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise awareness of accelerating climate change and the consequent biodiversity loss that comes with it. In achieving the objective of global action against accelerated climate change there have been numerous inspired climate combatting awareness activities undertaken by individuals, businesses, communities and organizations in over 180 countries and territories, Guyana included. The activities encompass a "LIGHTS OUT" period of one hour of which all unnecessary energy consumers are shut down. Following or prior to this event, there are several  initiatives taken for raising awareness and these vary from active panel discussions to tree planting and recycling projects developed on the basis of current environmental issues.

So if you're wondering whether and how do you fit into all of this, the answer is simple,
YOU have a RIGHT, to live in a clean, green and sustainable environment.
Every individual residing on Earth has a responsibility to protect their environment, not only for the sake of preservation, but also for their own well-being. So, we urge you to stand up for your right by sharing your solutions to the current environmental problems being faced by your locality or country and spread the word to your friends and family. Together, let's raise awareness and take action against accelerated climate change.
