School Outreach Programme on Climate Change (pilot school: Beterverwagting Primary School)

Visiting the Beterverwagting Primary School on the East Coast of Demerara hallmarked the beginning of the School Outreach Programme on Climate Change piloted by the non-profit organization, Garden City Innovations (GCI). The Eco-Trust Society joined Garden City Innovations in their great quest to bring Climate Change awareness and readiness to schools. The pilot school, Beterverwagting Primary offered a class of keen young listeners who readily took part in the edifying session on what climate change is and what it means to them. At the end of the class, children were engaged in a little quiz where they showcased their listening abilities and reasoning skills on climate change; providing simple and child-friendly ways of contributing to the actions against climate change. One of these ways surrounded their management of waste and what alternatives they can consider when disposing garbage.
On a side not, let us all acknowledge that children are our future and teaching them how to care for their surroundings is vital for them as well as their generations to live harmoniously with their environment. We do believe that in this venture, there can be a positive change in our children's attitudes towards their environs and maybe they can turn around to teach their parents a lesson or two on what should be done. Let us keep this healthy tradition alive by recognizing the need for action and passing on the knowledge to all we come across.
