Seventeeth Session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

Members of Eco-Trust Society under the umbrella of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) will be volunteering for CRIC17 which will be held from 28-30 January,2019 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. Here is some general information about the Conference from Guyana Lands & Surveys Commission:
The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) is the National Focal Point to the UNCCD, a legally binding international convention shared with one hundred and ninety-six (196) other countries. The Conference is to be attended by four to six hundred (400-600) persons from its Country Parties and will include operational units from UNCCD Secretariat and United Nations offices, country parties’ representatives, interpreters, media operatives (both local and international), administrative, other global partners and partner institutions and inter and non-governmental organisations.
Guyana will be hosting the Seventeenth Session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in January 2019. The CRIC is a subsidiary organ of the UNCCD and is mandated to assist the Conference of Parties (COP) with regular review of the implementation of the Convention. Cabinet approved the hosting of CRIC17 at a meeting on July 3, 2018.
The Government of Guyana is committed to the hosting of the event in Guyana and communicated its decision. Favourable consideration was obtained from the UNCCD Secretariat. As such, an initial Advance Mission from the UNCCD Secretariat visited Guyana in April 2018 to discuss the Host Country Agreement and its Annexes. During the visit, the team conducted a detailed assessment of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, the identified host venue. From its assessment, the team agreed that the venue would be suitable to accommodate the conference, subject to modifications that must be implemented to upscale the Centre to the desired standard of the United Nations, hence the need to urgently procure the supplies and services. A National Planning Committee has been activated along with thematic sub-committees to oversee and guide the country’s preparation towards this prestigious and ground-breaking first of its kind event in the country.
The Key Themes of the CRIC at intersessional sessions
The CRIC shall focus its work on the assessment of implementation by Parties and other reporting entities through, inter alia:

The Key Themes of the CRIC at intersessional sessions
The CRIC shall focus its work on the assessment of implementation by Parties and other reporting entities through, inter alia:
- Undertaking an assessment of implementation against performance indicators every two years and against impact indicators every four years;
- Disseminating best practices on the implementation of the Convention, focusing its work on thematic topics:
- capacity-building and awareness raising;
- policy, legislative and institutional framework;
- funding and resource mobilization, and
- participation, collaboration and networking;
- Reviewing financial flows for the implementation of the Convention;
- Giving recommendations to Convention's institutions and subsidiary bodies on priorities to be included in their programme of work and budget for the programming biennium;
- with a view to submitting to the COP a final report on sessions held between ordinary sessions of the COP as well as draft decisions prepared at sessions held in conjunction with the COP.
- The review of implementation at sessions held between ordinary sessions of the COP is based on reports by all reporting entities submitted at the same time.
