Mangroves are known to play an integral role in protecting coastal communities by acting as natural sea defenses. As such when an urgent call went out for volunteers to help clean up the mangrove forest at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, which had become overly polluted by plastic waste, members of the Eco-Trust Society as well as other like-minded youth were eager to answer.
Without any prompting or planning volunteers gathered on the Friday, the 11th September, 2020, to clean up the mangrove site. Within the very first hour a total of fifty bags of garbage was collected and the volunteers also set up a barrier to protect the mangroves from future build up of trash. Members of the Eco-Trust Society are hoping to continue participating in this initiative until all accumulated trash is cleared and replanting commences. |
